When grandma was young, they used sleeve leaves
Underarm sweat protection to avoid sweat stains: Small, loose, crescent-shaped pieces of fabric sewn to the inside of each armhole with a few stitches or fastened with press studs. This way you can simply loosen the sweat-absorbing sleeves and wash them separately. This way, washing can be delayed a little and it's also good for the environment.
It's good thinking by our forefathers and a good old tradition! Let's take it up again...
When our grandmothers were young, they sewed sleeves into their clothes. That was really good thinking! They protect your clothes from underarm sweat - avoiding sweat stains - and washing your clothes can be dragged out a bit. This gives you happy dresses that stay looking good for longer and a happy Mother Earth that is spared too much laundry. That's why I've decided to bring our grandmothers' good old tradition back to the people. Read on for a step-by-step guide to sleeve cuffs.
Use sleeves and save your clothes and the environment
When your laundry is dirty, and it often is, of course it needs to be washed. But many people wash far more than they need to. This causes a lot of wear and tear on the clothes and the color, and results in unnecessary water and energy consumption. Many times you can simply wash the dress under the arms, hang it out to air for a day and it's ready again. Or you can sew cuffs into your favorite dresses and just wash the cuffs separately. That way you don't have to iron the whole dress again, which many of us consider a big advantage.
I've sewn countless sleeves into clothes during my career as a costume designer. They are used a lot in theaters. Costumes aren't always easy to wash, so it can be a big help for actors who are always sweating in the spotlight. Some actors (like my mom) don't even want their costumes washed at all. As it's said to be bad luck because you wash the character out of the clothes.
That was a completely different conversation. Now I'm going to give you some tips on how to do it - step by step. Anyone can do it! Because it's as easy as boiling chickpeas.
Step by step
The small, loose, crescent-shaped pieces of fabric are sewn to the inside of each armhole with a few stitches - or attached with press studs. The advantage of using press studs is that you only need to get the needle and thread out once, and then you can simply button the sleeves on and off when they need washing. On the other hand, it takes a little time to sew in press studs properly. That's why you can easily just slip the cuffs on and off with a few stitches. It only takes a few minutes. It's entirely up to you what you're in the mood for.
Well, what you need to do is:
- The most pointed part of the crescent should be sewn on the front part of the armhole (towards the chest) and the flatter part of the crescent should be sewn on the back part of the armhole (towards the back). If it's a dress with sleeves, open the armhole so that it is distributed in the sleeve and in the dress part. But if it's a short-sleeved dress, the sleeve should just be double inside the dress like a crescent moon.
- Sew the armhole to the seams inside the dress so that it is not visible on the outside of the dress. If you choose press studs, I think you should sew the part with the dart on the sleeve and the part with the hole in the dress. Simply because it's more comfortable if you sometimes don't have the sleeves in when you wear the dress.
