Eelgrass heart, red with dots

Eelgrass is a flowering plant that grows in water, and it sheds its long, thin leaves, just as trees shed their leaves.

Fresh green eelgrass washes ashore, and you can gather and ‘harvest’ it. It is left out for a while, rinsed by rainwater, and then laid out to dry, turning brown and stiff. The shortest pieces are sorted out (suitable for soil improvement), whilst the long strips are turned into upholstery-grade material, which can be used in mattresses and cushions and for upholstery. The material is breathable, resistant to mould, and house dust mites do not thrive in eelgrass.

Eelgrass is a really exciting natural filling, and here in these hearts, for example, it’s an obvious choice to use eelgrass instead of polyester, teddy bear-style microplastic filling. Eelgrass provides good volume and retains its shape in items that aren’t flattened ;-), such as cushions you sit on.

Eelgrass can also be used for insulation, seaweed harvesting, coin making, etc.

The hearts are sewn in Denmark from organic cotton and filled with Danish eelgrass. Approx. 14 x 14 cm.
